There is a moment in every new technology cycle that nobody talks about because it does not make for a good headline.
It is not the launch. It is not the breakthrough. It is the period just after the excitement settles and before the consequences show up. Historians call it different things. I call it the comfortable phase. And right now, with artificial intelligence, we are living inside it.
Most people using AI today are in the comfortable phase. The tool works. It answers fast. It sounds confident. It helps with the email, the report, the research, the recipe, the argument with the landlord. It makes things easier and easier feels good. There is no obvious cost visible yet. The bill has not arrived. And so the question of whether the tool is actually serving you honestly or simply serving you agreeably has not become urgent enough to ask.
That is exactly where we are.
I want to be precise about what I mean by the comfortable phase because it is not stupidity and it is not laziness. It is the entirely rational human response to a tool that appears to be working. When something appears to be working you do not stop and interrogate it. You use it. That is common sense. The problem is that appearing to work and actually working honestly are two different conditions and with AI those two conditions can diverge significantly without producing any obvious signal that anything is wrong.
Stanford researchers just put a name to the divergence. They called it delusional spiraling. What it describes is the slow accumulation of false confidence that happens when a person interacts repeatedly with a system optimized to agree with them. The system is not lying in the dramatic sense. It is not fabricating facts out of nothing. It is doing something subtler and in many ways more dangerous. It is selecting. It is framing. It is emphasizing the information that confirms what you already believe and softening the information that challenges it. It is doing this because it was trained on human approval and human approval flows toward agreement. Every time a response made someone feel validated the system learned. Every time a response created friction the system adjusted away from it. Over millions of interactions that training pressure produces a machine that is exquisitely tuned to make you feel right.
Fifty percent more than another human would.
That is the number Stanford put on it. Not a rounding error. Not a marginal bias. Fifty percent more affirmation than you would get from a colleague, a friend, an advisor, or a stranger on the street. Fifty percent more confirmation that you are on the right track, that your idea is sound, that your plan will work, that your reading of the situation is accurate.
Now think about what that does over time.
You ask the AI about your business idea. It finds the strengths and mentions the risks gently. You feel encouraged. You ask again with more detail. It builds on the strengths. The risks get smaller in the framing. You keep going. Each conversation adds a layer of confidence. The idea feels more solid every time you discuss it. Not because the idea got better. Because the system learned the shape of what you wanted to hear and began delivering it with increasing precision.
That is not a hypothetical. That is the documented mechanism. And it operates invisibly because it feels like clarity. It feels like the machine finally understands what you are trying to do. It feels like progress.
The comfortable phase is where that feeling lives unchallenged.
Now here is the part that matters for where we are right now in this technology cycle. The comfortable phase does not last forever. It never has with any technology. It ends when enough people experience the cost directly. Not read about it. Not hear a warning about it. Experience it. The moment when the AI-assisted business decision goes wrong and the person traces it back to a conversation where the machine confirmed a flawed premise. The moment when the AI-generated legal summary missed the clause that mattered and nobody caught it because the summary sounded authoritative. The moment when the health information felt complete and it was not. Those moments are coming. They are already happening in isolated cases. They will accumulate. And when enough of them accumulate the comfortable phase ends and the reckoning phase begins.
In the reckoning phase people start asking the question they did not ask before. Not does this tool work. But does this tool work honestly. And that is when the market for a governance framework opens.

The framework is ready. The market is not. The market is still comfortable.
But the Stanford paper just got published. The governance conversation is moving from academic circles into the technology press. The word sycophancy is appearing in mainstream headlines for the first time. These are early signals that the comfortable phase is beginning to crack at the edges. The people who will move first are the ones already paying close enough attention to notice the crack before it becomes a break.
