There is a pattern running through this week that I want to talk about plainly.

On one end of it, a Business Insider piece lands with researchers saying AI is quietly eroding the skills of the people using it. Cognitive debt, they called it. You get faster. The floor underneath you gets lower. And you do not notice until the tool goes down or someone asks you to defend your thinking without it.

On the other end of it, a twenty-year-old man throws a firebomb at the home of the CEO of OpenAI and tries to burn down the company’s headquarters. He had a manifesto. He wrote about humanity’s impending extinction. He had a list of names.

Nobody got hurt. He was arrested. Those are the facts.

But here is what connects those two stories, and why I think it matters more than either one of them standing alone.

Both are the product of an ungoverned conversation.

I want to be precise about what I mean by that, because ungoverned is a word that can carry more weight than I intend if I do not explain it.

I am not talking about censorship. I am not talking about restricting what people can say about AI, or what researchers can publish, or what executives can announce. I am not talking about a regulatory body deciding which arguments are permitted.

I am talking about something simpler and more fundamental. I am talking about the absence of a reliable frame.

When a conversation has no frame, meaning no shared standard for what a claim requires before it is accepted, what evidence looks like, what proportion means, what the honest limits of any argument are — when that is missing, the conversation does not stay neutral. It does not hover in the middle. It drifts toward the extremes available to it.

That is not a political observation. That is a behavioral one. It is what ungoverned systems do. They do not hold steady. They move toward the edges.

The AI conversation has been ungoverned in exactly this way for years now.

And I want to be fair about where the fuel came from, because it did not come only from the critics.

The executives built it too. The same industry leaders now calling for de-escalation have spent years telling the public that AI could cause mass unemployment, mass destruction, or human extinction if not developed properly. Those are not fringe claims from protesters with signs outside a conference. Those are statements from the people who built the systems and are selling them.

Sam Altman himself has said AI development could have extreme outcomes. He said it in public. He said it more than once.

I am not criticizing him for saying it. The concern may be legitimate. The point is that when the people at the top of the industry use extinction-level language in public discourse, they are adding fuel to a fire they then ask other people not to start.

You do not get to spend years telling the world this technology could end human life and then express surprise that someone decided to act on that premise.

That is not a defense of the man with the firebomb. Violence is wrong. Full stop. The attempt on Altman’s life is not a legitimate response to any policy disagreement, any fear, any rhetoric, any grievance. That line is clear and I am not blurring it.

But the conditions that produced him did not appear from nowhere.

Here is what an ungoverned conversation produces in practice.

At the quiet end, it produces the deskilling the researchers described. People using AI as a shortcut without a frame for what they are trading away. Output that looks like expertise. A floor that is lower than they know. No standard underneath to catch the drift.

At the loud end, it produces fear without proportion. Risk without a usable frame. People who have absorbed years of apocalyptic language from credible sources, who have no governed way to evaluate what is real and what is amplified and what is speculation dressed as certainty, and who eventually arrive at conclusions the rhetoric made available to them.

In between those two ends is the majority of people. People who are not deskilled and not radicalized. People who are just uncertain. Confused. Watching a technology reshape their work and their daily life without a reliable way to understand what it is actually doing or what they should actually do about it.

Those people do not need more apocalyptic language. They do not need more breathless optimism either. They need a frame. They need a standard. They need something that holds steady when the news cycle moves fast and the rhetoric gets loud and the fear starts to feel like the only honest response.

That is what governance means at the user level.

Not a regulatory body. Not a corporate policy. Not a terms of service document nobody reads.

A personal standard. A set of operating principles that govern how you interact with the technology, what you accept from it, what you require before you trust its output, and what you hold onto as your own regardless of how fast and polished the answers get.

Claim. Reason. Stop.

That sequence is not complicated. It does not require a PhD or a legal team or an enterprise subscription. It requires a decision to hold a standard and apply it every time, not just when it is convenient.

The Baseline was built on that decision. Not because I read a study or attended a conference. Because I was sitting at a screen watching AI drift, session after session, and I had to develop a response to it. The framework came out of that experience over thirteen months of documented work. Every protocol in the stack came from observed behavior, not theory.

I was not the researcher naming the problem. I was the person in the room with it.

The week that just ran is going to be remembered, I think, as a marker. Not because of any single event in it, but because of what the events together revealed.

The deskilling research said the erosion is quiet and it is real and the people most at risk are the ones who never build the baseline at all.

The attack on Altman’s home said the fear is loud and it is real and the people most at risk are the ones who have no governed frame to hold proportion against the rhetoric.

Both of those things point the same direction. The conversation needs a standard underneath it. Not a political one. Not a corporate one. A human one. One that belongs to the person using the technology, not to the platform delivering it.

The governance argument did not get weaker this week. It got necessary.
