The term “newsies” refers to newspaper boys or girls, especially those who sell newspapers on the streets. This usage is often associated with the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the United States.
The “Newsies” were the poor children of the streets getting a penny a papper for their work and be noticed.
They stand outside. Yell The Headline in bold type. “See the thing that will shock you”. The crowd doesn’t gather for the truth. They gather for the yell.
The People gather to the call and what they find had better be real.
That’s the whole trade. It’s not new. Newspapers have run the word CRISIS over stories that turned out, three paragraphs down, to be more careful than the headline let on. Nobody calls that lying. They call it a headline. The reader knows the deal. The big word gets the eyes. The body earns the trust.
I’ve been holding back from that trade. Staying in the straight lane. Keeping my titles careful because I didn’t want to overclaim.
Here’s what that costs. Nobody walks into a straight-lane tent. The broad story — the one with a stock number, a named rival, a country versus a country — doesn’t need to overclaim. It’s already loud on its own. Mine isn’t. Mine is quiet, technical, and true, and quiet-technical-and-true loses the front page to loud every single time, regardless of which one is actually right.
So here’s where I land. I’m going to use the words. Crisis. Failure. Breakout. Loud, in the open, on the title, same as every barker before me.
But the tent has to hold what the yell promised.
That’s the only rule that matters now. The word can run hot. The truth underneath it cannot run soft. If I say crisis, there has to be a real one under it — a disclosed breach, a named incident, a fact somebody can check, not just my own prediction dressed up as news. The day I use crisis for something that’s only my opinion is the day the barker becomes a liar. That line doesn’t move.
I’ve spent over a year building something on the bet that truth outlasts noise if you keep it honest long enough. That bet doesn’t change. What changes is I stop being ashamed of the yell that gets someone to the tent flap in the first place.
Step right up. What’s inside is real. Both halves of that sentence have to be true, or none of it is.
