There is an election in a little over two months.

I am not going to tell you who is going to win it. I do not know, and neither does anybody else who tells you they do.

I want to talk about something underneath it.

Go stand in a grocery line on a weekday morning and watch.

Watch the woman two ahead of you put a box back on the shelf while the belt is moving. She does not make a scene about it. She just does the arithmetic in her head, decides which thing is the one she can do without this week, and hands it to the clerk to set aside.

Nobody in that line says a word about it. Everybody in that line has done it.

That is where this election lives. Not in the polling. Not on television. Right there, at the belt, with the arithmetic.

I have watched a lot of these cycles come around now, and there is a thing that happens in the ones that turn.

It is not that people change their minds about what they believe. Most folks hold what they hold their whole lives and never move an inch.

What changes is that they get tired.

Tired of hearing it. Tired of being told conditions are improving while the belt says otherwise. Tired of both sides pointing at each other, year after year, while nothing in the cart gets cheaper.

Tired is not a political position. That is what makes it dangerous.

A man with a political position can be argued with. You can bring him a chart. You can tell him the other fellow is worse. Sometimes it works.

A tired man does not argue. He just quits listening.

And a tired man still votes. That is the part the professionals underestimate every single time. He does not vote because he was persuaded. He votes because he has decided the people holding the keys have had their turn, and he would like to see somebody else try.

That is not a party thing. It has happened to both of them. It will happen to both of them again.

I remember running a job where the crew stopped complaining. That is the part that worried me.

Complaining meant they still thought somebody was listening. When it went quiet, the quiet was not agreement. It was men who had decided that saying it again was a waste of breath. And I knew right then that when the next chance came, half of them would take it and never tell me they were going.

The quiet was the warning. Not the noise.

I think a lot of the country is in the quiet part right now.

And I will say the honest thing about it, which is that being tired does not make anybody right.

A vote cast out of exhaustion is not a wiser vote than one cast out of enthusiasm. It is just a different reason. People reaching for the other lever because they are worn out will sometimes reach for something worse than what they had. That has happened plenty. It will happen again.

So I am not going to dress this up as wisdom. It is not wisdom. It is fatigue, and fatigue is a poor thing to steer by.

But it is real, and it is what is actually in the room, and anybody making plans that do not account for it is planning around a country that does not exist.

Here is what I would say to anybody trying to read the next two months.

Do not watch the shouting. The shouting has been the same for years and it tells you nothing.

Watch the quiet ones. Watch the people who stopped arguing about it at the table. Watch the ones who used to have a lot to say and now just change the subject.

They have not left. They are standing right there in the line, doing the arithmetic, waiting for Tuesday.

Political theory is a fine thing. Men have built careers on it and some of them are worth reading.

But it meets Tuesday morning eventually.

And Tuesday morning usually wins.
