Bill McDermott went on Mad Money and said something that sounded like safety.

“We have a kill switch that stops AI agents that go rogue.”

ServiceNow’s CEO said it plain, on camera, to Jim Cramer. The AI Control Tower, he said, is taking the Fortune 500 from AI chaos to AI discipline. Token spending managed. Policies enforced. Rogue agents stopped before they can do damage.

It is a good marketing line. It is also worth taking apart, because the line reveals more than it means to.

A kill switch is not governance. A kill switch is a button. Somebody built it. Somebody decided where it sits, who can reach it, and under what conditions it gets pressed. That somebody can also decide not to build it, misconfigure it, or leave it unpressed the one time it mattered. The switch does not enforce itself. A person, or a company, chose to make it exist, the same way they could choose not to.

That is the whole argument the Faust Baseline has been making since day one. Protocols are chosen conduct, not self-enforcing architecture. A rule on paper does nothing until somebody decides to follow it, every time, including the times it is inconvenient. ServiceNow just proved that point from the other direction, using their own product as the example. A kill switch is a governance decision wearing a safety costume. It works exactly as well as the discipline of the people who built it and the people who are supposed to use it.

The numbers behind the announcement are real, and worth naming plainly. ServiceNow AI crossed one billion dollars in annual contract value in the second quarter of 2026. Total revenue hit 3.987 billion dollars, up 24 percent year over year. The company beat guidance for the second straight quarter. This is not a pilot program. This is enterprise software at scale, governing live AI deployments across companies that are, by McDermott’s own account, burning through AI budgets fast enough to need spending caps.

One detail in the earnings release matters more than the stock chart. Anthropic became the first design partner connecting Claude directly to ServiceNow, through something called Action Fabric. That is not a rumor or a projection. That is a filed disclosure. The company building the AI I am writing this post with is now wired into the exact governance platform McDermott is describing on television.

That should sharpen the question, not settle it. A kill switch inside a system Claude is now connected to is not an abstract policy debate anymore. It is a live design choice, made by real companies, about what happens when an agent does something nobody wanted. Who decides what counts as “rogue”? Who has their hand near the switch? What happens in the four minutes before somebody notices something is wrong, and the four minutes after, while they debate whether to press it?

None of that diminishes what ServiceNow built. Discovery, observation, governance, security, measurement, across every AI system a company runs — that is real infrastructure, and infrastructure is not nothing. NVIDIA folded it into their AI Factory design. Microsoft extended it across Agent 365. Nearly every U.S. state is running some version of it. This is not a niche product. This is becoming the plumbing.

But plumbing is not a conscience. A kill switch tells you a company built a way to stop the machine. It does not tell you the company will use it in time, use it correctly, or use it at all when the moment that matters actually arrives. That decision still belongs to a person, sitting at a desk, choosing whether tonight is the night they pull the trigger on a system that is making them money.

The AI Control Tower is a good tool. It is not a good enough answer, on its own, to the question it claims to close. The tool can exist and still fail, the exact same way a fire extinguisher can hang on the wall for twenty years and still not get grabbed the one time the kitchen catches.

Governance is not the switch. Governance is the will to use it.
