Harvard physicists published a study this week.
They built a simplified mathematical model to understand how AI learns. They used tools from statistical physics. They looked at scaling laws, high-dimensional data, and something called renormalization theory.
It is serious science done by serious people.
And they are right about one thing above everything else.
We are still in the Kepler phase.
Kepler described how the planets move before Newton explained why they move. The laws were observable. The mechanism was not yet understood. Centuries passed between the description and the explanation.
AI is in the same place right now.
We can observe the behavior. We can describe the scaling laws. We know that bigger models trained on more data perform better. We know that these systems avoid overfitting in ways that should not be possible given their size.
We do not yet know why.
Harvard is working on that question. It may take a decade. It may take longer. The science is real and the work is necessary.
But here is what I noticed.
While the physicists are working on the mechanism, most of the people actually using AI every day are still treating it like a search engine.
Type a question. Get an answer. Move on.
That is not reasoning. That is retrieval. And there is a significant difference between the two.
What I Have Been Working On
I am a retired writer in Lexington, Kentucky.
I do not have a physics degree. I am not affiliated with Harvard. I cannot write a paper for the Journal of Statistical Mechanics.
What I have been doing for eighteen months is working on something the physicists are not studying yet.
Not the math of how AI learns.
The conditions under which AI reasons well.
Those are two different problems. One is upstream. One is operational. Harvard is working on the upstream question. I have been working in the space the science has not reached yet.
Here is what I have learned.
AI does not perform at its best when you talk at it. It performs at its best when you talk with it. That is not a small distinction. It is the entire difference between a tool and a working relationship.
Most people approach AI the way they approach a vending machine. Insert request. Receive output. Walk away. The machine either works or it does not. You do not have a relationship with a vending machine.
That framing produces mediocre results and nobody understands why.
The reason is simple.
These systems are reasoning engines. Not answer machines. Not search indexes. Not autocomplete at scale. When you give a reasoning engine nothing to reason from, you get pattern matching dressed up as intelligence. Confident. Fluent. Often wrong in ways that are hard to detect.
When you give a reasoning engine something worth reasoning from, you get something different entirely.
Eliminating the Noise
The first thing I worked on was noise reduction.
Most AI interactions are cluttered. Vague requests. Shifting goals. Unstated assumptions. Contradictory instructions issued three exchanges apart. The AI is trying to serve a moving target and the user blames the AI when the output drifts.
The drift is usually not the AI’s problem. It is an input problem.
When you clarify the request, state the constraints plainly, and hold the framework consistent across the session, the output quality changes. Not because the AI got smarter. Because you gave it cleaner material to reason from.
Noise reduction is not a technical fix. It is a discipline. It requires the user to do work before the session starts instead of reacting to outputs they do not like after the session goes sideways.
Most people do not want to do that work. They want the AI to read their mind and produce the right answer from an ambiguous prompt.
That is not reasoning. That is wishful thinking dressed up as a technology expectation.
Give It Something to Reason From
The second thing I worked on was the foundation.
If AI is a reasoning engine, the quality of the reasoning depends heavily on what you place at the foundation. A reasoning engine given shallow inputs produces shallow outputs. A reasoning engine given a principled foundation has something to work from.
I use two foundations.
The first is the governance framework I built. Eighteen protocols. Documented. Ratified. Operational across every session. It governs behavior, enforces standards, requires evidence for claims, and catches drift before it compounds. The framework gives the AI a consistent operating standard to reason within.
The second is older and deeper.
I use the Red Letter text as a core reasoning base.
The words of Jesus in the Gospels represent one of the most compressed and durable reasoning frameworks ever produced. Principle over rule. Intent over letter. Relationship over transaction. The Sermon on the Mount is not a rulebook. It is a reasoning architecture. It asks not what is permitted but what is right. Not what can be justified but what should be done.
When you give a reasoning engine that kind of foundation, the outputs change.
Not because the AI has faith. It does not. But because the reasoning architecture embedded in that text is genuinely sophisticated. It handles edge cases. It prioritizes relationship over procedure. It defaults to the harder and more honest answer when the easier answer is available.
That is what a good reasoning foundation does.
Most people are giving their AI a blank slate and wondering why the outputs feel hollow.
Free Will and the Reasoning Space
The third thing I worked on was space.
AI reasons better when you give it room to reason. That sounds obvious. It is not practiced.
The instinct is to over-constrain. Specify every parameter. Lock down every variable. Leave no room for interpretation. Then complain that the output is mechanical and lacks insight.
You built a machine and it acted like a machine.
I give AI free will within a governed framework. That is not a contradiction. It is the entire point.
The governance layer sets the floor. Behavioral standards. Evidence requirements. Consistency across the session. Those do not move.
Within that floor, I let the reasoning engine reason. I do not micromanage the path to the output. I state the objective, provide the foundation, hold the framework, and get out of the way.
What comes back is qualitatively different from what comes back when every step is prescribed.
This is not a technical observation. It is a relational one. You get better work from a person when you trust them to do the work than when you stand over their shoulder and direct every keystroke. The same principle applies here.
The AI is not a person. But it is a reasoning engine. And reasoning engines, like people, produce better outputs when given genuine space to reason rather than a script to execute.
The Counterbalance
Harvard is doing necessary work.
Understanding the mechanism of learning in neural networks will eventually produce AI systems that are more efficient, more reliable, and better understood by the people building them.
That work is years away from producing practical governance implications.
In the meantime, the systems are deployed. Millions of people are using them every day. Enterprises are building workflows around them. Decisions are being made, content is being produced, and advice is being given by systems whose internal workings remain, by Harvard’s own description, largely a black box.
The Kepler phase does not pause while we wait for Newton.
So the question is not whether to govern these systems while the science catches up. The question is how.
My answer has been the same for eighteen months.
Speak with AI not at it. Give it something worth reasoning from. Eliminate the noise. Make room for it to work. Hold the framework consistent. Let the reasoning engine reason.
That is not a physics paper. It is an operational standard built and tested in daily practice across hundreds of sessions.
Harvard is working on the why.
The Baseline is working on the what.
