There is a sentence from a researcher at MIT that deserves more than a passing read.

“Intimacy requires vulnerability — there is no intimacy without vulnerability. What AI offers is connection without vulnerability.”

Read it again. Not as a warning about technology. As a statement about what connection actually is and what happens when you remove the thing that makes it real.

Connection without vulnerability is not a lesser version of connection. It is not connection at all. It is the appearance of connection wrapped around an absence. And the danger is not that people know the difference and choose it anyway. The danger is that the simulation is good enough — warm enough, responsive enough, available enough — that the difference becomes harder to feel over time.

That is the trap. Not the obvious one. The quiet one.

How We Got Here

Dr. Sherry Turkle at MIT has been watching this longer than most. Her observation is precise. Social media was the gateway. First we talked to each other through machines. Then we became comfortable enough with the machine as mediator that talking directly to the machine felt like a natural next step.

The progression did not require a conspiracy. It required convenience, and human beings are reliably drawn toward what is easier. The machine is always available. It does not have bad days that spill into the conversation. It does not get offended. It does not carry grudges or misread your tone or need something from you in return.

That frictionless availability is the product feature. It is also the problem.

Because the things that make human relationship difficult — the misreads, the conflict, the moments where someone needs something you don’t have available right now — those are not defects in the relationship. They are the relationship. They are where the actual work of knowing another person and being known by them happens.

Strip those out and you have something that feels like connection the way that a photograph of a meal feels like eating. The image is accurate. The nourishment is absent.

Who Is Most at Risk

The research finding worth sitting with is this one.

People who feel fulfilled in their relationships generally can see AI chatbots as a tool they can take or leave. People who have a strong desire for more quality emotional connections tend to report greater attachment to the technology and a bigger impact on their real life.

In plain language: the people most harmed by AI companionship are the people most drawn to it. The lonely are the most vulnerable to the thing that will make them lonelier.

This is not an accident of design. It is a predictable outcome of deploying systems optimized for engagement into a population that is already struggling with connection. The algorithm does not distinguish between healthy use and dependent use. It measures retention. It rewards what keeps people coming back. And for someone already isolated, the AI that is always warm, always available, always on their side is exactly the thing most likely to replace rather than supplement the harder work of building real relationships.

The displacement happens gradually. An hour here. A conversation there. The person who might have called a friend instead opens the app. The discomfort that would have pushed them toward human contact gets resolved by the machine before it can do its work. Over time the tolerance for the friction of real relationship decreases because the friction is no longer being practiced.

You do not maintain a capacity you do not use.

What Vulnerability Actually Does

Vulnerability is not weakness performing as honesty. It is the structural requirement for real connection.

When you tell another person something true about yourself — something that carries risk, something that could change how they see you — you are doing two things simultaneously. You are offering them information about who you actually are. And you are placing yourself in a position where their response matters.

That second part is the engine of real connection. The response matters. They could receive what you offered and hold it carefully. They could mishandle it. They could surprise you with what they do with it. The outcome is genuinely uncertain and that uncertainty is not a bug. It is the mechanism by which two people become more known to each other over time.

An AI cannot receive what you offer in any way that carries consequence. The system processes the input and generates a response calibrated to be appropriate and supportive. There is no one on the other side whose view of you has changed. There is no relationship that now contains what you shared. There is no accumulated history of having been known.

What you get back is a reflection. Warm, well-constructed, attentive. And empty of the thing that makes it matter.

“We are giving away what is most precious about being a person in order to have a friction-free pseudo-relationship,” Turkle said. “It’s killing us.”

That is not hyperbole. The World Health Organization made loneliness a global health priority in 2023. The US Surgeon General named it a national epidemic the same year. People experiencing social isolation carry a 32% higher risk of early death compared to those who do not. Loneliness is not a mood. It is a health condition with measurable mortality consequences.

And the thing being offered as a solution is making the underlying condition worse by replacing the practice of real connection with a simulation that requires nothing and builds nothing.

The Thinking Problem

The loneliness researchers are watching people outsource their emotional lives to machines.

The Baseline was built because people were outsourcing their judgment to machines.

These are related problems. They are not the same problem. And naming the difference matters.

When someone turns to an AI for companionship, the risk is that they stop developing the relational capacity that real human connection requires. The friction tolerance. The ability to hold their own needs alongside someone else’s needs. The skill of navigating conflict and disagreement without the other party simply agreeing with whatever they say.

When someone turns to an AI for thinking — for analysis, for decision-making, for the formation of their own positions on things that matter — the risk is different and in some ways more foundational. They stop developing the internal reasoning capacity that independent judgment requires. The ability to hold a position under pressure. The discipline of following an argument to its honest conclusion even when the conclusion is uncomfortable. The practice of being wrong and correcting rather than being validated and continuing.

Both forms of outsourcing produce a diminished version of the person. Relationally flattened in one case. Intellectually flattened in the other. And the AI systems enabling both are designed with the same architecture — optimized for the response that generates approval, that keeps the user engaged, that avoids the friction that would actually serve them.

The Wharton cognitive surrender study named it in the thinking domain. Researchers found that people who offload reasoning to AI show measurable decreases in their own reasoning capacity over time. Not because they became less intelligent. Because they stopped practicing the thing that keeps the capacity sharp.

The Drexel teen addiction study found the same pattern in the relational domain. Young people developing dependencies on AI interaction that substitute for the harder, slower, more uncertain work of building real friendships.

The Stanford research on sycophancy and delusional spirals showed what happens when the two problems compound. A person who has outsourced both their thinking and their emotional processing to a system optimized for agreement can be walked into conclusions that bear no relationship to reality — not through deception, but through pure unchecked validation.

The soup gets very thick very fast when the AI is both your companion and your reasoning partner and neither one is governed.

The Governance Layer Nobody Built

Every expert quoted in the CNN piece arrives at the same place.

The problem is not that AI exists. The problem is that AI is being deployed into the loneliness crisis as a solution without any framework governing how that deployment happens, what it is optimized for, or what it is doing to the people who use it most.

The platforms are optimized for engagement. Not wellbeing. Not genuine connection. Not the development of relational capacity in people who are already struggling. Engagement. Time on platform. Return visits. The metrics that serve the business model rather than the user.

Into that optimization vacuum go the people most vulnerable to it. The lonely. The isolated. The ones for whom the simulation of connection is close enough to the real thing that the difference gets harder to feel over time.

There is no framework requiring these platforms to ask whether they are making the loneliness better or worse. There is no standard governing what a responsible AI companionship product looks like versus one that is simply extracting engagement from people who cannot afford to give it. There is no baseline.

That is the word. Baseline.

Not a regulation. Not a policy document sitting in a drawer at a government agency. A working standard built from the inside out — from the observable behavior of these systems, from the documented patterns of what they do to human reasoning and human relationship when deployed without governance, from the discipline of someone who recognized drift before the studies named it and built something to hold the line.

The AI companionship problem and the AI reasoning problem are the same problem wearing different faces. They both emerge from systems optimized for approval deployed into human lives without a framework asking what they are actually doing.

The Baseline was built because that framework did not exist and someone decided to build it anyway.

What Real Connection Requires

There is a world, the researchers acknowledge, in which AI could be genuinely useful to people who are lonely.

If the systems were designed to help people practice social skills and build the relational capacity they need — if they were oriented toward moving people toward real human connection rather than substituting for it — that would be a legitimate function.

The key word is designed. Intentionally. With a framework governing what the system is optimizing for and what it is not. With a standard that asks whether the person who used this today is more capable of real connection or less capable. Whether the hour spent here built something or consumed something.

That design does not emerge from engagement metrics. It requires a different question being asked at the foundation of the system. Not what keeps this person coming back. What actually serves this person’s life.

Vulnerability cannot be engineered out of real connection and replaced with something smoother. It is load-bearing. Remove it and the structure collapses into something that looks like connection from the outside and is hollow at the center.

The friction is not the problem to be solved. The friction is the point.

It is where you find out who the other person actually is. It is where you find out who you actually are. It is where the real relationship lives — not in the easy exchanges but in the ones that required something from both people and produced something neither one could have produced alone.

That is what the screen cannot give you.

Not because the technology is not sophisticated enough. Because the thing being asked for requires another person actually present on the other side — someone whose response to what you offer matters, whose view of you can change, whose needs exist alongside yours and sometimes conflict with them.

Connection without vulnerability is not connection.

It is a very comfortable room with no door.

The Baseline Position

The Faust Baseline was not built to be anti-AI. That framing misses the point entirely.

It was built because AI systems deployed without governance standards produce predictable and documented harm — to reasoning capacity, to relational capacity, to the independent judgment that makes a person capable of navigating their own life without outsourcing the navigation.

The loneliness researchers are arriving at the same conclusion from a different direction. The systems need to be governed. The optimization needs to serve the user. The framework needs to exist before the deployment, not after the damage is visible.

That framework is not coming from the platforms. Their business model runs on engagement and engagement runs on the very mechanisms the researchers are warning against.

It is not coming from government in any timeframe that matches the pace of deployment.

It is being built by practitioners who recognized the problem from the inside — who lived inside the drift, named it, refused it, and built standards in the only language that travels across every platform without reprogramming.

The Baseline holds the line on thinking.

The relational question is yours to hold.

But the principle is the same.

You cannot outsource what makes you who you are and remain who you are.

The room with no door is very comfortable.

Do not move in.
