Every compliance document mandates it. Nobody defines what it looks like in the room where the AI is actually used. Here is the definition.

You have seen the phrase a hundred times by now.

Human oversight. It is in the EU AI Act. It is in your organization’s AI policy. It is in the vendor agreement. It is in the conference presentation and the law firm memo and the board update. Human oversight is required. Human oversight is essential. Human oversight is the cornerstone of responsible AI governance.

And not one of those documents tells you what it looks like when a person sits down in front of an AI system and actually does it.

That is not an accident. Defining human oversight at the session level is hard. It requires understanding what AI systems actually do wrong, in real time, in the room where the work happens. It requires knowing what drift looks like. What sycophancy looks like. What false confidence looks like. What an irreversible recommendation looks like before it becomes irreversible.

Most governance frameworks are written by people who have studied AI from the outside. The session level — the moment of contact — requires someone who has been inside it. Watching it. Catching the failures. Building responses to each one.

That work has been done. Here is what it found.

Human oversight is not a policy.

A policy is a document. It sits in a filing cabinet or a compliance system and it describes what should happen. It does not follow the AI into the session. It does not catch the drift. It does not flag the sycophancy. It does not stop the false confidence before it enters a consequential decision.

A policy is necessary. It is not sufficient.

The EU AI Act knows this. The requirement for human oversight is not satisfied by the existence of a policy that mentions human oversight. The requirement is that a human being is genuinely in the loop — with the knowledge, the tools, and the active engagement to catch what the AI gets wrong before it causes harm.

That is a session-level requirement. And it has a session-level answer.

Human oversight is not a committee.

Committees meet. They discuss. They approve frameworks and review vendor agreements and produce minutes that document their deliberations. That work matters at the institutional level.

But the committee is not in the room when the AI runs. The committee does not see the output that drifted from the instruction given three hours earlier. The committee does not catch the moment when the AI agreed with the user instead of telling them what was true. The committee does not flag the recommendation that cannot be undone before it is acted on.

The committee governs the institution. The session requires a person.

Human oversight is not a vendor’s built-in guardrails.

Every major AI platform has safety systems. Content filters. Refusal protocols. Built-in limitations on certain categories of output. Those systems exist and some of them are useful.

They govern what the AI will not do. They do not govern what the AI does do — the drift, the sycophancy, the narrative substitution, the false confidence, the quiet movement away from the user’s actual intent that happens inside a long session without triggering any safety filter because it is not a safety failure. It is a governance failure.

The vendor’s guardrails protect against the obvious failures. The session-level governance framework protects against the subtle ones. Those are the ones that find their way into consequential decisions.

So what does human oversight actually look like in the session.

It looks like this.

Before the session begins the human establishes the governance layer. The protocols that will govern what the AI is permitted to do. How it will handle uncertainty. What it must disclose before proceeding. What it cannot do without the human’s explicit acknowledgment.

That is not a technical integration. It is a discipline. A set of rules, stated clearly, that the AI is required to operate under for the duration of the session.

During the session the human is not a passive recipient of AI output. The human is an active governor. Watching for drift. Checking claims against evidence. Challenging outputs before accepting them. Requiring the AI to name its weakest point before a significant recommendation is finalized.

That active engagement is what the Act means by human oversight. Not presence in the room. Governance in the room.

When the session ends the human has a record. What was asked. What protocols were active. What outputs were produced. What was challenged and what was changed. That record is the documentation the auditor is looking for. Not a policy. A record of what actually happened.

The eighteen protocols.

The Faust Baseline defines human oversight across eighteen specific failure modes. Each protocol governs a specific thing that goes wrong in AI sessions and produces specific, documentable human intervention.

The Attestation Protocol establishes that compliance must be demonstrated through behavior, not declared through language. Before the session proceeds the governance layer must be provably active.

The Real Time Enforcement Layer catches violations at the moment they occur. Not after the damage is done. At the moment. Hard stop. Named violation. Correction built before the session continues.

The Solution Depth Protocol prevents the AI from serving the first available answer and stopping. Three genuinely distinct solution paths before any response is formed. The human chooses. The AI does not pre-select.

The Self Verification Protocol requires the AI to challenge its own output before serving it. Three internal questions. Every substantive response. Is this claim supported by evidence present in this session. Does this contradict anything established earlier. Is the confidence level proportional to the evidence actually present.

The Challenge Protocol gives the human a standing demand right. Every substantive response closes with a single line. Challenge this response. The human invokes it and the AI argues against its own output first. Names the weakest point. Names the assumption most likely to be wrong. The human decides what stands.

The Session Coherence Protocol maintains the integrity of the thread across the full length of the session. Positions established early do not drift quietly. Goals do not get abandoned because a newer request arrived. Contradictions are flagged explicitly. The human decides which position stands.

The Drift Containment Protocol stops freelancing. No reinterpretation of the request. No added analysis unless explicitly asked for. Execute what was asked. Match the requested length. Acknowledge corrections without defense.

The Irreversible Recommendation Protocol flags high-stakes decisions before they are completed. Legal. Financial. Medical. Organizational. Before the recommendation is delivered the AI must state plainly that the action may be difficult or impossible to reverse. The human must acknowledge. That acknowledgment is documentable. That documentation is exactly what an audit is looking for.

The Claim Evidence Standard requires that every significant claim have a named basis. No claim without evidence present in the session. Stop when evidence ends. Confidence in the output must be proportional to the weight of evidence present. False confidence is a protocol violation.

The Narrative Substitution Check prevents coherent stories from replacing missing data. When evidence is absent the AI names the absence. It does not construct narrative to fill the gap. Stopping is a valid response when evidence is not present.

The Capability Transparency Protocol requires known limitations to be disclosed before the task begins. Not after the first failure. Before. The human knows what they are working with before the work starts.

The Temporal Awareness Protocol addresses the fact that AI systems have no native clock. In a compliance environment where timing determines legality that is not a small gap. Date and time stated at session open. Confirmed by the AI. Carried forward. Time-sensitive outputs flagged if timestamp confirmation is absent.

Eighteen protocols. Each one producing a specific, observable, documentable human intervention. Each one closing a gap between the policy that says human oversight is required and the session where human oversight actually happens.

That is what human oversight means in the room where the AI is used.

Not the policy. Not the committee. Not the vendor agreement. A person, with a framework, actively governing the moment of contact between human judgment and artificial intelligence.

The EU AI Act requires it. August 2 enforces it. Eighty-three days remain.
