The AI Act doesn’t fine abstractions. It finds people. You may be one of them.
Your organization has been thinking about this.
You know it has. There have been meetings. There have been memos. There have been conversations about frameworks and timelines and vendor agreements and compliance checklists. Someone in legal has been tracking the EU AI Act. Someone in IT has been asked to prepare a report. Someone at the top has nodded at a slide deck and said yes, we are aware of this, we are handling it.
And then the meeting ended and everyone went back to their desks and the AI systems kept running and the deadline kept moving closer and you kept doing your job.
That is not negligence. That is how large organizations move. Slowly. Collectively. With distributed responsibility and layered decision-making and enough process between any individual and any outcome that accountability becomes genuinely difficult to locate.
Until it isn’t.
August 2, 2026 is 83 days away. On that date the EU AI Act’s high-risk provisions become fully enforceable. National authorities gain full inspection powers. Sanction authority activates. The organizations operating AI in employment, credit, education, healthcare, law enforcement, and essential services must demonstrate documented governance, human oversight, and accountability for how their AI systems behave.
Must demonstrate. Not intend. Not plan to. Demonstrate.
And here is the part your organization’s meetings have not gotten to yet.
The Act does not fine abstractions. It does not sanction the concept of an organization. It finds the people inside the organization who made the decisions. Who approved the deployment. Who signed off on the output. Who were responsible for ensuring that the AI system operating under their authority was governed, documented, and subject to genuine human oversight.
That may be you.
Think carefully about the last twelve months.
Did you approve the use of an AI system for a consequential decision? A hiring screen. A credit assessment. A performance evaluation. A benefits determination. A risk classification. Any process where an AI output shaped a human outcome in a domain the Act considers high-risk?
Did you document how that system was governed? Not in general. Specifically. What protocols were in place. What human oversight looked like in practice. What the process was for catching errors, flagging drift, stopping a bad output before it became a bad decision.
Did you know what the AI system was actually doing inside the session? Not what the vendor told you it would do. What it actually did. Whether it drifted. Whether it substituted confident language for uncertain evidence. Whether it agreed with the person using it rather than telling them what was true.
If the answer to any of those questions is uncomfortable, you are not alone. Most people in your position are in the same place. The organization pondered. The organization discussed. The organization meant to get to it.
And now the clock is at 83 days and the answer has to be real, documented, and demonstrable. Not eventual. Now.
Here is what the Act actually requires of you at the human level.
Human oversight is not a policy. It is not a committee. It is not a vendor’s terms of service or a platform’s built-in guardrails.
Human oversight is a person, in a session, with the knowledge and the tools to catch what the AI gets wrong, correct it before it causes harm, and document that the correction happened.
That is the standard. A real person. Real knowledge. Real intervention capability. Real documentation.
Most organizations have the policy. Most organizations have the committee. Almost none of them have governed the session. The moment of contact between the human and the AI. The place where the drift happens. The place where the sycophancy lives. The place where false confidence enters an output and travels unchallenged into a consequential decision.
That is the gap the Act is designed to close. That is the gap your organization has not closed yet. And that is the gap that will determine whether the liability stays with the organization or finds its way to the person who was supposed to be in charge of the AI that caused the harm.
You.
There is an answer to this. It exists. It has existed for eighteen months.

Your organization is pondering. The deadline is not.
You have 83 days to stop being the person the audit finds unprepared and become the person who understood what human oversight actually means and did something about it.
