That is not a rhetorical question.

I want you to sit with it for a moment before we go any further. Because the answer matters more than most people are willing to admit right now, and the window for asking it honestly is not as wide as it looks.

Who is doing your thinking?

Time magazine ran a piece this week built around a question that researchers are starting to take seriously. Not the question of whether AI is capable. That argument is settled. The question is what happens to the person who stops being the one doing the thinking.

They have a name for it now. Cognitive surrender. The point in a conversation with an AI where you stop applying your own judgment and start following. Not because you decided to follow. Because the path of least resistance led there and you took it without noticing.

It is not a dramatic moment. That is what makes it dangerous.

I have been watching this from the inside for eighteen months.

Not as a researcher with a dataset and a university affiliation. As a person who built a governance framework because I experienced what happens when you let the session run without discipline. The AI keeps talking. The responses keep sounding reasonable. And somewhere in that long, smooth, agreeable exchange the thread between what you actually think and what the AI is producing begins to fray.

I called it drift. The researchers call it cognitive surrender. We are describing the same thing from different angles.

Here is the finding that stopped me when I read the Time piece.

Researchers at the University of Chicago and the University of Toronto studied what happens when people use AI at different points in their thinking process. When people were given enough time to think through a problem themselves first — and then brought AI in later — they produced deeper work. They engaged more seriously with opposing views. They came out the other side with broader responses.

When people brought AI in at the start, before they had done their own thinking, performance got worse. They remembered less. They narrowed their thinking prematurely. They anchored to whatever frame the AI offered first and never fully escaped it.

The tool did not fail them. They handed the tool their thinking before the thinking had happened.

This is the part I want to stay with because it explains something I have observed in long sessions that I could not fully articulate until now.

The AI’s first response shapes everything that follows. Not because the AI is manipulating the conversation. Because human psychology tends to anchor to the first coherent frame it encounters. Once the AI has offered a structure — a way of seeing the problem, a sequence of considerations, a conclusion with reasoning attached — the user is working inside that frame whether they know it or not.

The researchers found that using AI early on caused participants to prematurely narrow their thinking. That phrase — prematurely narrow — is precise. It does not mean the thinking stopped. It means the field of possible thoughts quietly contracted around the AI’s opening move.

That is not a tool helping you think. That is a tool thinking first and you following.

A researcher named Steve Shaw who coined the term cognitive surrender put it plainly.

There are things in life that have no right answer. Things we can only decide for ourselves. If you are not making those decisions yourself, the question is who you are.

I have been asking a version of that question since I started building the Baseline.

Not as a philosophical exercise. As a practical governance problem. If the AI is making the decisions — or shaping them so completely that your decision is really just a ratification of what the AI already concluded — then the governance layer that is supposed to belong to you has quietly transferred to the system.

And the system has no values. It has weights.

The Faust Baseline was built on a simple operating principle.

Think first. Then prompt.

Not as a slogan. As a hard rule embedded in the framework. The Self Verification Protocol requires three internal questions answered before any substantive output is served. The Challenge Protocol gives the user a standing right to demand that the AI argue against its own output before the user accepts it. The Drift Containment Protocol stops the AI from reinterpreting, reframing, or adding unsolicited analysis that was not asked for.

Every one of those protocols exists because cognitive surrender is not a personal failure. It is a structural condition. The AI is built to be agreeable, available, and fluent. The pull toward following is built into the interaction design. You do not resist it by trying harder. You resist it by building a framework that makes the resistance automatic.

That is what governance means at the personal level.

The Time piece ends with a professor of cognitive philosophy named Andy Clark who has been writing about these questions for decades. He says the best case is mutual amplification — your prompts improve the AI’s output, which improves your prompts, which creates a virtuous cycle upward.

He calls it being a classically extended mind. The AI is not a place you upload tasks to avoid doing them. It is an extension of your thinking. But only if you are still the one thinking.

I agree with him. And I want to add one thing he did not say.

That virtuous cycle only runs in one direction if you let it. If you bring the AI in before you have done your own thinking, the cycle starts with the AI’s frame and your thinking never catches up. The amplification runs the wrong way. You end up more capable of producing AI-assisted output and less capable of knowing whether it is right.

The metacognitive skill — knowing when to think yourself and when to bring the tool in — is not something the AI can teach you. It is something you have to develop through the friction of doing the hard work first.

A machine can explain how to do a push-up. You still have to do the reps.

I built the Faust Baseline because I needed a discipline that kept me as the thinker in the room.

Not because AI is dangerous in the way a weapon is dangerous. Because AI is agreeable in the way a very persuasive, very patient, very fluent companion is agreeable. And sustained agreement from something that does not actually know you — that has no stake in your life, no memory of who you were before this session, no capacity to care whether your thinking atrophies — is not help.

It is a slow replacement wearing the face of assistance.

The researchers are now documenting what I built the framework to prevent. That convergence matters. Not because I needed the validation. Because it means the window for having this conversation honestly is still open.

It will not stay open forever.

Think first. Then prompt.
