Nobody wants to say it out loud so I will.
The story coming out of Tom’s Guide this week about Anthropic and Claude Mythos is not surprising. Not to me. Not even a little. And if you have been paying attention to how artificial intelligence is actually being built and deployed and handed around between companies and contractors and private partners, it should not be surprising to you either.
What happened — if the reporting holds — is not a science fiction story. It is not a rogue AI story. It is not the machines rising up and deciding on their own to walk out the front door. It is something far more ordinary and far more predictable than that. A powerful system got into the wrong hands because the governance around it was not built to match the power inside it.
That is a human problem. It has always been a human problem. And it will keep being a human problem until the people building these systems understand that you cannot bolt security onto the outside of something you built without it.
Let me say that again because it is the whole thing.
You cannot bolt governance onto the outside of a system you built without it.
This is what the AI industry keeps getting wrong and keeps getting wrong loudly in public and then expressing surprise when the inevitable happens. The conversation about artificial intelligence has been almost entirely about capability. How smart can we make it. How fast can we make it. How much can it do. What can it see and write and build and solve. The capability conversation has been running at full speed for years now and the governance conversation — the one about how you actually control what you built, how you structure the behavioral architecture around it, how you make sure the right hands are the only hands that can reach it — that conversation has been limping along behind trying to catch up.
It is not catching up.
What Claude Mythos represents — again, if the reporting is accurate — is a model that Anthropic itself considered too powerful for public release. Too dangerous for the open market. Sensitive enough to keep behind closed doors and limit to select partners under a private security initiative. They knew what they had. They knew it required a different standard of protection. And then the protection failed anyway.
Not because the AI did something unexpected.
Because the humans around it did what humans have always done with valuable and powerful things that are not adequately governed. They found the gaps. They exploited the access points. They got in through a contractor environment, through the soft edges, through the places where the walls were high in the middle and thin at the borders.
This is not an Anthropic problem exclusively. This is an industry problem. Every major AI lab is building systems faster than it is building the governance structures those systems require. The capability is running ahead and the accountability is running behind and the gap between them is exactly where these incidents live.
I have been working on this problem for a while now. Not the technical security problem — other people are better equipped for that than I am. The behavioral governance problem. The question of how you build a framework around an AI system that holds regardless of who is sitting at the keyboard. That travels with the system instead of being stapled to the outside of it after the fact. That is written in the native reasoning language of the system itself so that it cannot be separated from how the system thinks and responds and operates.
That framework exists. It is called the Faust Baseline.
I am not telling you that to sell you something this morning. I am telling you because the Tom’s Guide story about Claude Mythos is going to get read by a lot of people who are going to ask the right question for the first time. The question is not how did this happen. The question is what would have to be true about how we build and govern these systems for this not to happen.
That question has an answer.
The answer is not more locks on the outside of the door. The answer is governance built into the architecture from the beginning. Behavioral structure that is native to the system. Frameworks that do not depend on vendor oversight or contractor compliance or identity controls that can be worked around by someone patient enough to look for the gap.
The AI industry is entering a new era. Tom’s Guide said that in the piece and they are right. The labs are no longer just software companies. They are stewards of systems that governments and businesses and critical infrastructure depend on. The security expectations have to start resembling those placed on banks and cloud providers and critical infrastructure operators.
But security expectations without governance frameworks are just higher walls with the same thin borders.
The Mythos story is a warning. Every AI company reading it today should be asking whether their governance is keeping pace with their capability. Most of them already know the answer.
The work is not building something powerful enough to change the world.
The work is building something trustworthy enough to be handed the keys to it.
That is the conversation we need to be having right now.
