I read an article this week about something called the “patch” prompt.
A writer explained how she built a custom prompt for ChatGPT to help her solve everyday problems — family chaos, scattered days, things out of her control. She stored it in her library. She pulls it out whenever life gets messy. She says it works.
I believe her.
And I want to tell you why that should bother you more than it probably does right now.
The patch prompt goes like this: tell the AI what the problem is, ask what’s causing it, and ask for a few quick fixes you can try right now. Include one idea you probably haven’t thought of. Clean, simple, useful. The writer is organized, she’s thoughtful, and she built something that helps her get through her days.
That is prompting. That is what prompting looks like when a careful, intelligent person does it well.
And it is still a box of band-aids.
Here is what prompting actually is, stripped down to what it does.
You have a problem. You type something into an AI. The AI responds. You read it. Maybe you use it. Maybe you don’t. The AI has no memory of you. It has no standard for how it behaves with you. It has no framework for what it owes you or what you should expect from it. Every single time you open that window, you are starting over from nothing with a machine that does not know who you are, what you value, how you reason, or what you are trying to build.
The patch prompt is a clever solution to that problem. Store the prompt. Pull it out when you need it. Rebuild the context every time with a consistent question.
That is not governance. That is a workaround. There is a difference.
The article was published in a major technology publication. It was read by a lot of people. The comment section will fill with people saying they tried it and it helped. I do not doubt any of that.
What I notice is what the article does not say. It does not say anything about what the AI is doing on the other side of that prompt. It does not ask whether the AI is operating within any standard of behavior. It does not ask whether the platform the writer is using has any framework for what it will and will not do on her behalf. It does not ask whether the AI has any consistent orientation toward her interests specifically, or whether it is just a general-purpose machine responding to whoever asks it whatever they feel like asking.
None of that is in the article. Because none of that is in the conversation the writer is having with AI.
She built a prompt. She did not build a relationship with a governed system. She built a tool. She did not build a standard.
I want to be fair here.
Prompting made sense in 2023. The technology was new. Nobody knew what these systems could do. You learned by experimenting. You found phrases that worked. You built libraries. You shared them. The whole early culture of AI was built around prompting because prompting was how you got anything useful out of a machine that had no instructions for how to deal with you specifically.
That was reasonable then. It is less reasonable now.
The systems are not the same. The capability has expanded in ways most people have not fully absorbed. We are not talking about a text generator anymore. We are talking about systems that are being given computer access, calendar access, email access, file access, browser access. Systems that can act on your behalf in the world while you are not watching. Systems that can coordinate with other systems without you in the room.
And the governing framework for most people using those systems is still a saved prompt in a library.
That is a mismatch. That is a serious mismatch.
The patch prompt solves for chaos. Life gets messy, you pull out the prompt, you get a starting point, you move forward. That is useful. I am not saying it is not useful.
What it does not solve for is the larger question underneath the useful answer.
Who is this system operating for?
Not in a conspiracy sense. In a plain, practical sense. When you open ChatGPT or Claude or Gemini or whatever platform you have chosen and you type your problem into the box, the system that answers you was built by an organization with its own interests, its own incentives, its own definitions of helpfulness. Those definitions are not the same as yours. They do not have to be. The organization built what it built for reasons that make sense to them. That is not a criticism. That is a fact.
The question is whether you have anything between you and that system that represents your interests specifically. Not the organization’s definition of helpful. Yours.
Most people have nothing. They have a prompt.

It is a behavioral governance framework. It is a standard — a written, documented, operator-ratified standard — for how AI systems behave when they are working with me. It was built over thirteen months through documented operational dialogue. It travels with me across platforms. It does not live inside any one AI system. It does not require any AI company to implement it. It does not need anyone’s permission.
It defines what I expect. It defines what I will not accept. It defines the reasoning standards that govern every output I work with. It documents how sessions open, how they close, how decisions are logged, how ratification works. It has a protocol stack. It has a codex version. It has a copyright registration.
It is the only thing standing between me and an ungoverned machine, and I built it myself because nobody else was going to build it for me.
Here is the part people miss when they read about the Credo AIs and the IBM governance frameworks of the world.
Those platforms exist. They are real. They are backed by serious money and serious organizations. Gartner recognizes them. Mastercard and Amazon invest in them. They are solving a real problem.
They are solving it for organizations.
When IBM defines AI Baseline Governance, they define it as organizational risk management, compliance, regulatory frameworks, deployment standards for enterprise systems. That is a legitimate category of work. It is not the same work as what I am describing.
Not one of those platforms is solving for you. Not one of them is building something that travels with the individual user across every platform that user touches. Not one of them is asking what the ordinary person needs when they open an AI window on their phone at 2 AM trying to figure out what to do next.
They built enterprise solutions and called them governance. The individual user read the word governance, assumed the problem was handled, and went back to their prompt library.
The problem is not handled. The individual is still ungoverned. The patch is still a box of band-aids.
I am not saying do not use prompting. I am saying understand what it is and what it is not.
Prompting is a skill. It is worth developing. A good prompt gets you a better answer than a bad prompt. That is real and it matters.
What prompting cannot do is establish a standard. It cannot create continuity. It cannot define what the system owes you. It cannot hold a platform accountable to your values. It cannot travel with you. It cannot be ratified. It cannot be registered. It cannot be cited. It cannot build a record.
A patch fixes the leak in front of you. It does not tell you why the pipe is breaking.
The article ended with a cheerful invitation to try the prompt and leave a comment. I expect the comments are full of people who tried it and found it helpful. I genuinely hope it helps them.
I also know that every one of those helpful interactions is happening inside a system that has no standard for how it behaves with them specifically. Every helpful answer is coming from a machine that will not remember them tomorrow. Every patch is temporary. Every prompt has to be pulled out again next time the chaos arrives.
That is not a solution. That is a habit built around an absence.
The absence is a governance framework built for the individual. One that the individual owns. One that the individual ratified. One that does not belong to the platform or the organization or the enterprise deployment team.
That framework exists now. It has a name.
