Nobody trusts Washington to get AI right. This is the thing that touches every job, every kid’s classroom, every doctor’s office, every camera on every corner. They know the stakes are too high to hand it to the same lawmakers that can’t agree on anyhing.
So here’s my thoughts of what is actually happening and you be the judge.
I don’t think the country has gone quiet because it stopped caring. I think it’s gone quiet because it’s watching. Waiting. The way a man waits before he puts his full weight on a board he isn’t sure will hold him. He doesn’t walk away from the bridge. He doesn’t refuse to cross it. He just isn’t going to step out onto something that might give way under him.
That’s where this country is right now. Standing at the edge. Not moving. Not because the will isn’t there. Because the ground isn’t solid.
The people don’t need permission to build the ground. They never did. They’ve been told, for years now, that governing something this big requires an act of Congress, a regulatory body, a small army of lawyers and lobbyists standing between an ordinary person and any say in how this technology treats them. That’s the story that’s been sold. It’s not true. It was never true. It’s just the story that keeps people standing at the edge.
A framework doesn’t require a vote to exist. It requires somebody willing to write it down, test it, live inside it, and let it hold up under the weight of daily use before anybody official ever looks at it twice. That’s not a workaround. That’s how solid ground gets made. Nobody legislates a bridge into existing. Somebody builds it first. Then people cross it. Then, eventually, if enough people are crossing it every day, somebody in an office notices the bridge is already there and writes the law that says yes, that’s the standard now.
That’s how order actually happens. Not law first, then trust. Trust first, built in the open, tested by ordinary use, until it’s too solid and too well-traveled to ignore.
I built the Baseline on that order. Not as a bet that Washington moves first. As a bet that the ground has to exist before anybody can stand on it, government included. The ethos, the logic, the common sense, the integrity holding it together — none of that waits on a permission slip. It’s already out there, dated, public, growing one post at a time, whether anybody in a suit has noticed yet or not.
If the country really is in a wait-and-see mode, waiting for something solid before it commits its voice to it, then the answer isn’t to wait alongside it. The answer is to keep building the thing worth standing on, so that when people are finally ready to step off the edge, there’s ground there that holds.
That’s the bet this whole project has always been. Not that government moves first. That the ground gets built first, and everything else follows the ground.
We are that ground that holds the weight we live and build on it, we just need to upgrade the infrastructure to hold it better.
