The Weight You’re Carrying Isn’t Yours Alone
If you feel tired lately, you’re not imagining it.
The feed never stops. One bad headline lands, and before you catch your breath, three more are stacked on top of it. It’s built that way on purpose. Outrage keeps people scrolling. Fear keeps people watching. Nobody in that business is paid to give you a way out. They’re paid to keep you looking at the problem.
So let’s talk about the way out.
Not a fix for the whole country in one sentence. Nobody has that. But something real, something you can actually hold onto when the next bad headline lands.
Here’s the first thing worth remembering. You have never once, in your whole life, been asked to fix the country by yourself. Nobody is. That’s not how it’s ever worked here. Not in 1776, not in 1965, not now. It’s always been a lot of ordinary people doing small, steady things at the same time. One person votes. One person shows up to a school board meeting. One person checks on a neighbor who’s been quiet lately. Add those up across a town, a state, a country, and that’s the actual machine. It was never one person carrying the weight. It was always a lot of people carrying a little.
That should take some pressure off, not add to it. You don’t have to solve this today. You have to do your part today. Those are different jobs, and the first one was never yours.
Here’s the second thing. This isn’t the first time this country has felt like it was coming apart. Go back and read about 1968. Go back and read about the 1930s. People who lived through those years were certain, dead certain, that the whole thing was ending. It wasn’t. It bent hard. It scared people badly. And it held, because enough ordinary people kept doing the small steady things instead of giving up or blowing up. History doesn’t promise it holds every time. But it tells you this: the times it held, it held because of exactly the kind of people reading this right now. Not the loud ones. The steady ones.
Here’s the third thing, and it’s the one people skip past because it doesn’t feel big enough. Talk to your actual neighbor. Not the internet. Not a stranger’s comment section. The person down the street. Most people, face to face, are a lot less far apart than the feed wants you to believe. The feed makes money off you thinking the person next door is your enemy. Go find out for yourself if that’s true. Most days, it isn’t.
So what does the way out actually look like, in plain terms?
It looks like showing up where you actually have a vote — your town, your county, your polling place — instead of only shouting at the parts you can’t touch. It looks like staying informed without staying plugged into outrage all day, because those are not the same thing. It looks like checking on the people around you instead of only checking your phone. It looks like remembering that steady beats loud, every single time history has actually been written down.
You are not powerless. You’ve just been shown the parts of the picture that make you feel that way, because that’s what keeps you watching. The other part of the picture — the part where ordinary people, one small steady act at a time, are the actual reason this country has made it through worse than this — that part is just as true. It’s just not as profitable to show you.
Carry what’s actually yours to carry. Let the rest go. That’s not surrender. That’s how the load has always gotten carried, by everybody taking their piece instead of one person trying to take it all.
