Last week Anthropic announced a model called Claude Mythos.
They did not release it to the public. That decision alone tells you something important.
What Mythos did during internal testing was find thousands of previously unknown security vulnerabilities — in every major operating system, every major web browser. Flaws that survived decades of human review and millions of automated tests. Found by a machine. Autonomously. At a scale no human team could match.
Anthropic’s response was not to release it. Instead they launched something called Project Glasswing — controlled access to roughly forty companies including Amazon, Google, Apple, and CrowdStrike. The stated purpose is to patch the world’s critical software before the capability becomes widely available.
That is a serious decision made by serious people who understood what they had built.
The media coverage reached for doomsday language. Weapons we cannot envision. AI apocalypse. That framing generates clicks. It also obscures the actual story, which is more important and more useful than the fear version.
Here is the actual story.
AI capability is now moving faster than the governance frameworks built to contain it. Anthropic’s own internal safety thresholds — their Responsible Scaling Policy — flagged Mythos as too dangerous to release. That policy exists because someone built it deliberately before the capability arrived. It worked this time. The model stayed internal.
The question worth sitting with is what happens when a company without that policy builds the same capability. Anthropic’s own researchers expect comparable models from competitors within six to twelve months. Not all of those companies are applying the same standard.
There are honest critics worth noting. Some have called the public announcement of Mythos a form of regulatory capture — a way of positioning Anthropic as the responsible adult in the room while controlling who gets access to the most powerful tools. Both things can be true. The decision to withhold the model may be genuinely responsible and strategically beneficial at the same time.
What this moment confirms is something the Baseline has been saying from the beginning.
The gap between what AI can do and what the average user understands about what AI can do is growing. Not shrinking. The institutions building these systems are making governance decisions that affect every person who touches a keyboard. Most of those people have no framework for evaluating what is happening or protecting their own interests inside an AI interaction.
That is not a doomsday argument. It is a plain observation about where things stand.
The answer is not fear. The answer is the same one it has always been. You build a standard. You hold it. You govern what you can reach from where you stand.
That is what personal AI governance is for.
