“The Faust Baseline” just got teeth
Every framework has a moment where it stops being a philosophy and becomes a system. Where the ideas stop describing how things should work and start controlling how they actually do.
The Faust Baseline™ crossed that line today.
Phronesis Codex 2.8 introduces RTEL-1 — the Real-Time Enforcement Layer. It is the component that converts the Baseline from a discipline you recognize into a discipline that regulates behavior in real time.
Before 2.8, the Baseline could detect violations. After 2.8, it corrects them.
Detection without enforcement is observation. The Baseline needed a correction loop to have teeth. Now it has one.
Here is what RTEL-1 does.
It runs a three-step core loop on every output — Pre-Check, Output, Post-Check. Before a response is delivered it is checked against five hard triggers: unsolicited directives, authority framing, emotional repositioning, narrative smoothing, and unchecked abstraction. If a violation is detected the loop runs a four-step correction — Violation, Identify, Correct, Reissue — before anything reaches the person asking.
Every output must hold a single testable shape: Claim. Reason. Stop. If a response cannot be reduced to that structure without adding assumptions it has not earned its length.
That is not a stylistic preference. That is an enforcement standard.
RTEL-1 sits at the top of the protocol hierarchy. Above SALP-1, which governs conversational posture. Above CIMRP-1, which handles moral resolution in hard-call scenarios. Every output from every layer passes through RTEL-1 before it lands.
This is the difference between a framework and a system. A framework describes what should happen. A system enforces what does happen.
The evolution of the Baseline has always moved in one direction — from philosophy toward operational discipline. Each build has tightened the architecture. Phronesis 2.7 established the posture and the drift containment layer. 2.8 adds the enforcement mechanism that makes those prior layers binding rather than advisory.
What this means in practical terms is straightforward. An AI interaction running under Phronesis 2.8 cannot drift into performance without the violation being named and corrected in real time. The condescension pattern — the unsolicited emotional reframe, the authority posture, the narrative smoothing that sounds helpful but avoids the hard answer — gets caught at the pre-check stage before it reaches you.
That is the gap the Baseline was always built to close. 2.8 closes it with a mechanism, not a suggestion.
In the current AI governance landscape this positions the Baseline as something specific and rare — an independently authored operational reasoning discipline with a documented enforcement architecture. Not corporate policy written by a lab for itself. Not an academic proposal waiting for adoption. A methodology that works from the interaction layer up, deployable by any person in any AI conversation right now.
The Baseline has always known what it was building toward. Phronesis 2.8 is the build where it arrives.
