Fog is comfortable.
It dulls edges
It lets people move without being fully seen—and without being fully responsible.
Fog is not confusion.
Fog is permission.
Permission to delay.
Permission to hedge.
Permission to speak without committing to what happens next.
Most systems are built to preserve fog.
Institutions rely on it.
Committees thrive in it.
Modern language inflates inside it.
Because fog allows motion without obligation.
You can sound aligned without being bound.
You can signal intent without carrying risk.
You can appear thoughtful without ever deciding.
That is not an accident.
That is design.
Commitment is expensive.
It always has been.
The moment you commit, you narrow your options.
You place weight on words.
You accept that failure will have a name—and that name will be yours.
That is why commitment is avoided, reframed, or softened.
Fog keeps exits open.
When you leave no fog, commitment becomes unavoidable.
You don’t get to stand halfway between yes and no.
You don’t get to start without finishing.
You don’t get to retreat into tone when outcomes arrive.
This is why plain commitments make people uneasy.
They remove plausible deniability.
Fog lets bad ideas linger.
Fog lets weak plans survive review.
Fog lets systems drift while claiming progress.
Under fog, accountability becomes optional.
Under fog, responsibility becomes collective enough to belong to no one.
Remove the fog and something uncomfortable appears:
Commitment with consequence.
Not intention.
Not alignment.
Not aspiration.
Commitment.
Commitment means:
– if this works, we own it
– if this fails, we own it
– if this harms, we answer for it
That is a weight most systems are not structured to carry anymore.
So they substitute process for responsibility.
Language for action.
Endless revision for decision.
And when pressed, they retreat into abstraction:
“It’s complicated.”
“There are many factors.”
“We need more discussion.”
“We’re still evaluating.”
Those phrases are not explanations.
They are fog machines.
They exist to delay the moment commitment becomes visible.
Leaving no fog does not mean being reckless.
It does not mean being harsh.
It means being bound.
Bound to what you said.
Bound to what you started.
Bound to the real cost of moving forward.
Commitment forces structure.
You must define the goal.
You must define the limits.
You must define what failure looks like before you begin.
Fog allows you to redefine those things afterward.
That difference is everything.
Commitment respects people enough to let them rely on you.
Fog assumes reliance is dangerous.
A clean system does not persuade first.
It commits first.
It does not soothe uncertainty.
It narrows it.
It does not promise comfort.
It promises coherence.
When fog clears, some people walk away.
They always do.
That is not rejection.
That is sorting.
What remains is smaller.
Quieter.
Far more real.
The people who stay are not guessing what you mean.
They know what you will do.
No fog means no escape hatches.
No fog means no borrowed authority.
No fog means no movement without ownership.
It means the system stands on what it commits to, not what it implies.
That is the cost.
And that is the point.
